21 January 2012 Deadline to identify immigrants bodies from disaster
    2 January 2012
The Disaster Victim Identification team (DVI) of the East Java Police have been given until 21 January, 2012 to complete the identifications. After that, bodies that have not been identified will be buried in the Putat Jaya Surabaya.
The deadline for the identification process, according to Police Commissioner Didi Agus Mintadi is because of the difficulty in obtaining ante mortem data. The bodies of 84 illegal immigrants were taken to hospital in East Java. Since 21 December 2011 only 13 bodies have been identified.
Conditions are difficult to identify the bodies because they were in the sea for a long time and this does not make identification easy. Outward signs such as tattoos have also disappeared.

Compostela village searched after deadly landslide
    6 January 2012. Philippines.
Authorities resumed searching today for victims of a landslide that killed at least 22 people in a remote Philippine gold-mining village where miners work their small-scale claims with pickaxes.
Officials have no good estimate of how many people are missing but say early reports of up to 100 were overblown. Many could have stayed elsewhere for the Christmas holiday, they said, or may have fled their mountainside shanties earlier in the night when the hill started to crumble.
Initial reports of about 100 missing were based solely on the number of shanties believed lost, but many residents would have been on Christmas holiday or evacuated hours earlier when the ground started moving, Pantukan town spokesman Arnulfo Lantayan told The Associated Press.
"We are very confident that it will not reach that number," he said.
The municipal disaster office lowered its earlier death toll of 25, as reported by residents and village leaders, to 22, based on the number of bodies recovered, Lantayan said.

'Over 3,000' killed in South Sudan massacre
    6 January 2012.
Over 3,000 people were killed in South Sudan in brutal massacres last week in an explosion of ethnic violence that forced tens of thousands to flee, the top local official said on Friday.
"There have been mass killings, a massacre," said Joshua Konyi, commissioner for Pibor county in Jonglei state.
"We have been out counting the bodies, and we calculate so far that 2,182 women and children were killed and 959 men died."
United Nations and South Sudanese army officials have yet to confirm the death tolls and the claims from the remote region could not be independently verified.
If confirmed, the killings of 3,141 people would be the worst outbreak of ethnic violence ever seen in the fledgling nation, which split from Sudan in July.
