Vacancy Background:
The position is based in Sarajevo, Bosnia but will involve forensic archaeological excavation throughout the region of the former Yugoslavia, and possibly other locations. The person will be responsible for conducting work tasked from the Supervisory Forensic Archaeologist/Field Operations Manager and will work at a variety of site types or locations to provide technical archaeological and anthropological assistance relating to excavation/recovery of human remains and associated evidence from mass graves or other sites. The individual should possess skills relating to both forensic anthropology/osteology and archaeology.
Anthropology:
Undertake the osteological/anthropological analysis of human remains with the ability to accurately assess sex, age and stature of remains as well as identify individualizing characteristics and describe them accordingly; the creation of anthropological/biological profiles and individual case reports; the input of all gathered data into electronic databases. To undertake re-association of skeletal elements, where possible in the field. To perform examination of all skeletal elements for the purpose of identifying appropriate samples to cut or extract for DNA testing. Make and maintain accurate records regarding remains during site excavation/exhumation.
Archaeology:
Provide technical assistance at site and to provide survey data and written records of exhumation/excavation to anthropology staff at ICMP mortuary facilities. To undertake the assessment, archaeological recovery and survey of human remains, comply with ICMP guidelines and field records and assist in the location of suspect mass graves and clandestine gravesites. To provide accurate documentation relating to the excavation, exhumation of sites and to personally enter all data into ICMP databases.
Higher degree in anthropology or archaeology preferred
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Good osteological skills
- Previous attested experience within the international forensic arena preferred
- Previous archaeological field experience on complex excavations
- Computer literacy with Microsoft Office
- Experience of Microsoft and GIS computer programs preferred
- Familiarity with databases preferable
- Experience in working in confined spaces, caves, wells etc preferred
- Good written and spoken command of English
- Level of Bosnian/Serbian/Croatian language an advantage
- Self-organised and able to work to deadlines
- Good communication skills
- Able to work within a flexible environment with a multi ethnic and international team
- Ability to work independently but also within a team
- Membership of the American Academy for Forensic Sciences or equivalent preferred but not essential
