Vacancy Background:
The selected candidate is expected to: assume the supervisory role in archaeological excavation at field sites, or designate another as supervisor; coordinate, as necessary, logistics associated with ICMP field site activities; provide oversight and technical assistance at site; provide survey data and written records of exhumation/excavation to anthropology staff at ICMP mortuary facilities; direct the creation and review of formal site reports; develop and maintain guidelines according to internationally recognized standards and see that they are adhered to; and to provide expert assistance to ICMP personnel and local commission teams during exhumation; participate in training programs, either to develop, coordinate, or to directly provide training where needed and appropriate. The candidate will be responsible for archaeological recovery and survey of human remains, creation of accurate records and assistance at site locations and for providing accurate documentation relating to the excavation, exhumation of locations of mass graves and clandestine gravesites.
Duties:
- Under the direction of the Deputy Director of Forensic Science, Archaeology and Anthropology Division, to act as supervisor of ICMP staff members engaged in field archaeological activities (subordinate staff members may be assigned team leader or other supervisory roles);
- To ensure sufficient logistical coordination at field sites: this is to be achieved with the support of other Forensic Science Department (FSD) staff such as the W. Balkans Foresnic Science Program Head, program assistants, etc¡K;
- To assist in the development of programs of training of ICMP staff or others, and directly provide training where appropriate;
- To provide technical assistance/support to various local experts and other designated parties at mortal remains recovery sites and to monitor such activities;
- To make and maintain accurate records regarding remains during site excavation/exhumation;
- To ensure remains are recorded both on paper record and electronic survey;
- To assist in recovery of related artifacts during excavation;
- Maintain hard copy and electronic documentation (database) of assistance/monitoring activities;
- Contribute to the completion of official reports on sites where ICMP has provided technical assistance;
- Assist with development and evaluation of ICMP¡|s Forensic Data Management System, as relates to forensic archaeology;
- To participate in meetings with other FSD staff and management to foster strategic planning and coordinate activities;
- To locate and record grave outlines if possible;
- To establish archaeological relationships (sequence of events) within the site and grave;
- Establish a minimum number of individuals and confirm that commingling of remains is addressed during recovery;
- Handles and prepare human remains for further examination according to ICMP standards;
- Ensure that human remains are logged appropriately by crime technicians;
- Establish an accurate grid using an electronic survey, to establish the global position of site and remains;
- Responsible for the accurate mapping of site features including artifacts and human remains;
- Daily maintenance of survey equipment/battery, tripods etc;
- To coordinate with crime technicians in order to avoid confusion with numbering system;
- To manage collected data either through daily transfer or weekly download;
- To provide ICMP archaeologists/anthropologists/pathologists/local prosecutors with accurate maps of graves, artifacts and remains within a final report.
- To participate in personnel management of staff, including recruitment, hiring, evaluation, and discipline.
- To direct and/or contribute to reporting on archaeology and anthropology activities on a regular basis, and as needed
- To assist with project proposals for new activities and fundraising.
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Undergraduate degree in archaeology or related disciplines required. Higher degree preferable;
- Good osteological skills;
- Previous archaeological field experience on complex excavations;
- Experience and competence in the use or archaeological and surveying equipment;
- Mature perspective, flexibility, and guiding mentality associated with senior or supervisory position;
- Ability and willingness to effectively delegate tasks, and empower subordinate staff;
- Good written and spoken command of English language;
- Experience of Microsoft and GIS computer programs preferred;
- Good communication skills, self organized and able to meet deadlines;
- Able to work within a flexible environment with a multi ethnic and international team;
- Willingness to work long hours and ability to work unsupervised.
